Every year regional time means big money and prizes to the world’s top duelist from across the globe, and if you intend on competing then you’ll need to make sure your deck is in top form. What are some of the best ways to do this? Well you can play test a lot, make sure your up to date on every current rule and trend in the Yu-Gi-Oh world, and be sure to come up with a few off the wall strategies of your own!
First and foremost when preparing for a dueling season you’ll need to make sure you have a deck or three to play test with. Having just one solid deck is not going to be enough; you’ll need to be sure that you have options at your fingertips to be the number one duelist in the world. You’re decks should include a couple of beat down options, and of maybe a couple of tech one turn kill (OTK) options as well. When you have these decks together you’ll be ready for the next phase of preparation, play testing!
In the Yu-Gi-Oh anime Yusei, Jack, Yugi, and even the infamous Seto Kaiba played in more duels then anyone cares to remember, but it’s an essential part of any duelist career. You need to play a lot and every day to make sure that you stay sharp and on top of your game. Most every tier 1 duelist can name every card in their deck without even thinking and tell you every combination their cards can pull off with one another. This is an essential skill when it comes to trusting your deck and making a duel run at your tempo.
When you have your decks and get familiar with the cards they contain you’ll need to find other duelist to contend with. You can find local tournaments at Yugioh-card.com but sometimes the best duelist to play test with are your friends and family. A good duelist can play for hours and still not learn everything about their deck. Trust what other have to say about your deck and use a combination of ideas to come up with the best deck possible!
Be sure to keep you deck current and up to date when preparing for any Yu-Gi-Oh event. Check the forbidden and limited list to make sure you have a legal deck, and be sure you know the timing and effects of many key cards before entering into any duel. Also check chatter online to see how trends are being set. Many sites devoted to Yu-Gi-Oh will have message boards that veteran duelist frequent and talk about current strategies and trends. This information can be crucial when deciding on what deck will best suite you for any regional event.
One last thing you can do to be sure that your ready to take on the top dogs of the dueling world is to have a few neat tricks of your own up your sleeves. Since the introduction of Yu-Gi-Oh to the world thousands of cards have been printed. From Legend of Blue-Eyes until now there are so many cards that you can bet not every combination has been thought of and not every card has been given a fair shot in a deck. Look at current card combos, look at old combos, and see if you can invent, or re-invent something that just may give you an edge at a regional event. Just like Jaden and the Elemental Heroes and Yusei with his Stardust Dragon see if you can come up with your own signature move!
Dueling is all about fun and every Yu-Gi-Oh tournament you attend you should remember this, but the regional season can be a bit different, and at times the competition can be fierce. Just be sure that you’re as prepared as possible when entering any regional event. Plays test a lot, keep tabs of trends around the country and be sure your deck is up to date in every way possible. Regional’s are tough, but a lot of fun, and they are a great way to help any Yu-Gi-Oh duelist grow.
