The people of Britain and the rest of the world have finally received the news that they’ve long awaited. After months of rumors and speculation, it’s finally official. Us Weekly is reporting that Prince William and Kate Middleton have announced their engagement. Bookies have been taking bets, the media have been interpreting movements of the Prince to predict wedding dates, but apparently the couple engaged back in October while on a 10-day safari holiday in Kenya.
Prince William is the oldest son of Prince Charles and Britain’s beloved late Princess Diana. The two met while attending college at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Middleton does not come from a royal family. Both her parents worked for an airline company before starting their own business.
The eyes of the world will be trained on Britain till the day of the nuptials and beyond. There are many questions surrounding the announcement. The dress is sure to be amazing, but will Middleton wear a traditional Victorian gown, as Princess Diana did in her marriage to Prince Charles, or a more modern gown in keeping with the times? Middleton is known to be fashion-forward, so it will be very interesting to see the choice that she makes. Will she maybe wear a custom-made gown designed by the likes of Vera Wang, or will she opt for a low-key, lesser-known designer? Hopefully she won’t need any ration coupons to purchase materials for her gown, as the Prince’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, did when she married Prince Philip.
In the announcement, it was said that the wedding would take place in the spring or summer of 2011, but the name of a venue was not released and is not publicly known. Some would like the Prince to marry at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London like Prince Charles and Princess Diana, but others seem to think it will be somewhat inappropriate and are suggesting they may tie the knot in Westminster Abbey, as Queen Elizabeth did; the queen mum is said to be “absolutely delighted” by the news.
While details are lacking at this point, the wedding is sure to rival that of the Prince’s parents in 1981. Hopefully, the date and venue of the long-awaited affair will soon be announced. After the wedding, the couple plans on living in north Wales, where the Prince will continue his service with the Royal Air Force.
