Probiotics that good bacteria found in the human stomach. Probiotics are used in alternative medicine to prevent and treat certain illnesses and conditions. Scientific evidence is now showing support in the use of probiotics in health.
According to the World Health Organization probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that when taken in proper amounts, provide health benefits. This good bacteria is important for the immune system to develop correctly, provide protection from microorganisms that could cause disease, and adds the digestive system to digest and absorb food and nutrients. All of this is vital for a persons health and overall well being.
Science is starting to recognize the beneficial use of probiotics for the prevention and treatment of health conditions. Currently, there is some sound evidence for probiotics use in medicine. Research is constantly continuing to validate the consumption of probiotic containing foods and even probiotic supplements for the advancement of good health and without side effects.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has just released a new report concerning probiotics and health. This reports gear towards noting that probiotics is a practical and natural treatment for adults and children who have stomach viruses and diarrhea.
Dr. Dan W. Thomas and Dr. Frank R. Geer, have reported that they have discovered probiotics aide in the treatment of gastrointestinal infections such as rhino virus, diarrhea, eczema, asthma and inflammatory bowl syndrome.
Probiotics noted to prevent and reverse candida
Candida is a kind of yeast infection. It usually remains under control with proper diet for good health and probiotics. The overgrowth of candida can happen if the system is challenged or altered. Consuming too a good deal of yeast feeding foods such as sugars, milk products and carbohydrates promote the growth.
The use of the normal treatment of antibiotics decrease the probiotics ability to fend off candida.
Probiotics are extremely effective when candida happens in the mouth, which affects a lot of elderly persons. The main assumed reasoning for this is that probiotics contains the ability to manufacture hydrogen peroxide. However, other studies note that probiotics may produce many actions.
Children with autism, ADHD and other developmental disorders have also been noted to be infected with candida.
The issue with candida is that yest is very difficult to eliminate. Conventional treatments usually consist of strong medications that produce severe side effects and have are not a very effective treatment.
Natural treatments such as probiotics have been demonstrated to be effective. The probiotics simply overwhelm the intestines with the good bacteria which leaves no space for the yeast to develop.
For the effective treatment of candida and other intestinal problems a high content of probiotics is required. There are products on the market which have been noted for treating candida. One formula is the Doctors Formula which contains a blend of five different types of good bacteria that include Lactobacillus acidophilus. This formula is stated to contain 100 billion CFU (colony formula units) in one capsule. The recommendation is one capsule twice a day taken on a empty stomach.
Probiotics decrease infection risk in children
The attraction of probiotics in managing allergic conditions derives from evidence which has shown that probiotics decrease inflammatory cytokines and improve intestinal capability.
Probiotics may actually decrease the occurrence of common infections in children which decreases days off from school.
In a study conducted by the University of Rome, used a three month daily supplementation with a probiotic mix during the winter season and had decreased the risk of infection by 25% in children aged three to seven years old.
The study consisted of 135 healthy school aged children who had endured a minimum of three ear-nose-throat, bronchopulmonary or gastric disorder in the past winter. They had received supplements of probiotic Lactobacillus or a placebo for three months.
The results of the study had shown that 50% of the children receiving probiotics did not have any of the above health problems. This had displayed a decrease of 25% of risk from infectious disease. Also, only 25.8% of the children missed one day of school.
The conclusion of the study indicates that probiotics decrease and prevent respiratory infections and the use of probiotics is not limited to children only.
Cold and flu prevention
Studies have now shown that probiotics aide the immune response for the prevention of colds and flu and recovery time is decreased.
Probiotics are available in many forms including yogurt and cultured milk products such as sour cream.
A study published in the medical journal Pediatrics, consisted of 326 children in China, ages three to five years old. Each child had received milk with probiotics twice a day. The children had been observed for six months.
The results had shown that one probiotic is helpful but when taking two types of probiotics the benefits become much greater. The group taking one probiotics (Lactobacillus) had half the amount of fevers than children in the placebo group. They also had 41% decrease in colds and 28% decrease in runny noses. When they had become ill was one third shorter in time than the placebo group. There was also a decrease of 68% in the use of antibiotics. They also had a 38% decrease in the number of days for missing school.
In children that received both probiotics of Lactobacillus and Bifidfobacteerium had shown more than two-thirds less fevers, 62% decrease in coughs and 59% decrease of runny noses. The length of illness was cut in half compared to the placebo group. Less school was missed than the group taking only one probiotic and 84% reduction of the use of antibiotics compared to the placebo group.
This study was done during the cold and flu season.
Reduction of eczema and skin allergies
In a Dutch study conducted using 150 pregnant women with allergic disease history within their families. In the last six weeks of pregnancy, they had received either three types of probiotics or a placebo.
After the women gave birth to their children, they were observed by Dutch researchers. The children then continued to receive either probiotics or a placebo for one year. After three months, the cases of eczema was less than half of the placebo group.
After one year none of the children received probiotics. Many of the children still remained under observation until they had become two years old. Upon reaching that age, the margin between the occurrences and eczema within the two groups of probiotics and placebos did increase slightly.
However, even with the slight increase in the margin, it was still substantiated that probiotics do produce an effect on children from allergy prone mothers.
