I needed cat litter for my hamsters and decided to try something all natural because I was worried their cancer, which is spreading, was being caused by the cat litter. I had done a bunch of hunting and most of the stores I’d been to didn’t have anything. But I discovered Better Way Scoopable cat litter at Big Lots in the back of the store. I was looking for something as finely grained as Tidy Cat litter use to be. So the size of the actual litter really caught my eye, as you can see it through the bag. This really made me happy since I had spent so many days opening up cat litter boxes looking for fine grain, and only discovered the larger clay pellets that every style cat litter seems to be made with. Very disappointing to say the least, and I would love to know why they changed.
Everything about Better Way Scoopable cat litter read perfect: natural, cedar, scoopable, 3 out of 4 cats prefer it, multi-cat, problem cats, and even a litter introduction! What should have caught my eye was the fact it wasn’t a 1-800 number on the back, and the very fact they actually suggest flushing it down the toilet.
Just a little information for you, hamster’s urine doesn’t smell as bad as cats, so I figured it would work just as great as Tidy Cat’s, and save my hamsters lives too, as well as the environment. I change my hamster’s cages and clean out their litter boxes once a week. After two days of Better Way Scoopable cat litter I went into my dining room where I keep my hamster village . . . and smelled hamster piss! There used to be no evidence I had any pets, let alone hamsters. I couldn’t believe it, this was unreal. Natural is meant to be better all the way around. I can’t imagine Better Way ever being used for cats, there is no way it would control the odor problem, and having to scoop it out each time they would use it would defeat the whole purpose of having a litter box.
I decided to call Better Way to see how they address this problem. I explained how I use the cat litter for hamsters. I think this must have sent them into shock because I was put on hold, then transferred to someone else, and that someone else didn’t seem very lucid. Better Way’s only excuse is they have never had a bad report on their cat litter. That Better Way has never EVER had a bad report. I explained how it might be because their phone number on their products isn’t a 1-800 number.
Better Way’s consumer support assistant’s only excuse was that cedar shouldn’t be used for hamsters because it could kill them. Added to that, they never heard of hamsters being litter box trained. It was very difficult to get the gentlemen to focus on my issue. He did inform me that if I took it to Big Lots without the receipt they would take it back and give me a refund, which I doubt, but anyway, he said they would refund me the cost if I provided them the UPC code from the package and a letter explaining what had happened. I paid long distance to call them and informed them their product doesn’t work on hamsters, and how I can’t imagine it would work on cats, and was basically blown off with their “perfect record,” and how “it’s never been used on hamsters” excuse. This is all the more reason why Tidy Cat is a clear winner in comparison to Better Way Cat Litter. Better Way? More like worst way.
