On November 2nd, 2010, Californians will vote on Proposition 19, the ballot initiative that will “Control and Tax” Cannabis, aka Marijuana. This measure would allow people 21 years of age, and older, to possess up to one ounce of Marijuana legally under California law, making California the first state in the country to legalize its use.
As a Californian, how could you not support Proposition 19?
Legalizing Marijuana would be beneficial to the entire state of California, not just the people that consume it. Not only does this state has a huge budget deficit, which could benefit from the “Taxing” side of the initiative, approving this measure would allow our police officers, to prosecute criminals with violent cases, that otherwise go unsolved.
Obviously, this country has spent millions of taxpayer dollars prosecuting Marijuana users, and keeping Marijuana out of the hands of consumers, and just in case you haven’t noticed, it isn’t working. The truth is, that millions of residents of this country, believe that legalizing Marijuana would be beneficial for many different reasons.
You cant argue that fact, that the legalization of Cannabis for medical reasons, has helped thousands of people. From ADHD, to cancer, to GI problems, Marijuana is being prescribed regularly as medication for these problems. In the state of California, where marijuana has been legalized for medical use, we have already seen how much money our state has lost by not taxing it. There is an estimated $14 billion in Marijuana sales every year here in California, which could result in $1.4 billion in revenue for the state each year. Why shouldn’t we use the tax-created revenue, to fund health care, public safety, transportation, roads, parks, etc. We tax alcohol, and allow people to use, what I would consider to be, much more than a mind altering substance, and it is perfectly OK with society.
The fact that society has accepted alcohol as an everyday substance, and we are voting on legalizing a natural plant, is completely ridiculous. Cannabis aka Marijuana is a plant, that grows out of the ground. It is not processed in any way, and contains no additives. How can it be worse than alcohol?
Do you ever hear people saying my mom, son, or husband was killed by a pot smoker?
Didn’t think so. What you hear, more often than not, is people saying their loved ones were killed by a drunk driver. These people are indirectly killed by a substance that is sold in stores everywhere, and is completely legal. A “killer” product that society allows, to be promoted with commercials, promos, and nationwide events.
The fact of the matter, is that alcohol is one of the worst drugs people can get their hands on. The effects from using alcohol are far worse, than that of Cannabis, and we have all seen proof of that. If you haven’t, just check up on the statistics of drunk-driver related deaths, that occur every year here in our country, and compare them to that, of marijuana-user related deaths.
I think people need to do what is right for California, and its people, and vote “Yes” on Proposition 19. In agreement with the Official Voter Information Guide, “We need a common sense approach to control Marijuana”.
