“Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor” (Proverbs 21:21).
These words remind me of Jesus’ teaching to “seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Mt. 6:33). Because we are unrighteous sinners, seeking righteousness and finding it in Christ is an essential part of the Christian message.
But the proverb above does something interesting by inserting the word “kindness.” Along with a pursuit of righteousness, wisdom would have us pursue kindness. So kindness is a way to life, righteousness, and honor. This is not to say you can have your sins removed and be fit for eternity simply by showing kindness to others. The righteousness you need to stand in the presence of the Almighty can only come through faith in Jesus. Nevertheless, the proverb elevates kindness to the highest level by pairing it with the word used to describe the nature of Christ and the condition of the saved soul.
With this in mind, let us obey God today by reaching out to those around us with kindness. Kindness is a mild and gentle attitude toward other people. It is being helpful and understanding of other. It is showing love. In essence it is acting like Christ.
Are you pursuing kindness today?
