We found out today,
we have to put Jake,
our cat that used to like to spy and play,
My husband cried for the sixteen years he adored him,
I cried for the eight years I loved him too,
all of this happened on such a whim,
Jake, the gray and white bandit, who knew.
I had to tell my daughter what was going on,
she has loved him for five,
(even though she is now just seven, it took that long to catch on)
Tears welled up in my eyes.
She cried with me, her head on my shoulder blade,
I wondered how we could love a pet so,
but with her wise age, going into second grade,
she asked, “Can we wait to let him go?”
The Vet said that we make the decision for the “sleep”
and if I could have my very own way,
I would make the time for that slowly creep,
but we know is has to be done soon and we’ll pray.
Jake, we loved you and always we shall do so,
(my daughter recovered with some cookies, juice and tv,)
but nothing can compare to the love of you,
we will miss you so much my sweet little pea.
