Congratulations to Qatar, the recently announced host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament. Qatar managed to beat out several countries, including Australia, South Korea, Japan and the United States, for this coveted role. It came down to a final vote between Qatar and the United States; Qatar won out 14-8. Japan had even shown off a plan to implement a live, life-size holographic version of the major games to be shown in stadiums in other countries.
It was also announced today that Russia will be hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament.
Qatar is a Middle Eastern country that is a peninsula that borders only Saudi Arabia. Qatar is known for its rich oil and gas reserves that are considered to be some of the best in the world. The reserves were first discovered in the 1940s at a time when Qatar was a small, struggling country in need of industry.
Now Qatar is one of the world’s richest and fastest growing countries per capita. This country is roughly the size of Connecticut, and has a population that is one-third the size of the New England state.
With cheap gasoline and high-quality highways and roadways, most visitors will likely travel by automobile while there for the World Cup. There is an airline, Qatar Airways and an airport, Doha Qatar International Airport. Visitors will likely find the weather in Qatar uncomfortable. The World Cup takes place in June and July of each tournament year. The average high temperatures for Qatar are in the 100s, with lows coming in at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although the FIFA World Cup is not for 11 years, there is some general advice for traveling to Qatar. The US Department of State recommends that before your trip, you inform the embassy that you will be traveling there, and also provide your general itinerary. Qatar is relatively safe. A
lthough it is a Muslim nation, and operates under Sharia law, those who are not Muslim are not subject to the strict laws. Some of Qatar’s general laws are based in the Muslim religion, though, and non-Muslims will be subject to those laws. There are certain items that are banned from being brought into Qatar. For example, religious materials are allowed, so long as the material is only for personal use and not proselytization.
