Rainbow Grocery is a tremendous asset to the Mission Community. The Rainbow Grocery is famous for the 20% coupons in the Yellow Pages, but another great value is the free tours on good food for school children in the local community.
Rainbow Grocery is in the Mission District, and very close to Potrero Hill. I found out that Rainbow Grocery gives tours to schoolchildren quite by accident, as I was shopping there. Quite frequently, when we think about organic food, we think of higher prices, and not about lower income school children. Yet the virtues of good food are equally applicable to all children. Rainbow Grocery offers tours to all children, including inner city students. The guide teaches students in their own language and in terms that they can understand. The guide not only talks about good food, but the relationship between food and transportation.
Rainbow Grocery is different from Food Co. across the street. Rainbow Grocery is a worker-owned co-op that offers lots of locally grown food. Food Co. has a lot of nationally-recognized brands at very low prices. They are both invaluable to the community.
