News that Randy Moss was traded to the Minnesota Vikings is taking the NFL by storm. The news of Randy Moss being traded is only rumor still at this point, but ESPN is reporting that a deal could be very close. If we are to believe reports coming out on Tuesday, then the New England Patriots are trying to trade wide receiver Randy Moss to the Minnesota Vikings. The rumors go on to state that the only thing holding up a possible deal is that Minnesota wants Moss to agree to a contract extension so that he cannot test free agency at the end of the current NFL season.
If the Minnesota Vikings were able to pull off a trade for Randy Moss, it could definitely shift the balance of power in the NFC. Right now the Vikings have sunk to the middle of the pack due to injuries, and the current wide receivers for Minnesota haven’t been helping out quarterback Brett Favre as much as they have in the past. If Favre gained Moss as a deep threat on one side of the field, it could certainly make these Vikings an even better team. Favre has a nice offensive line in Minnesota, so they could certainly give enough protection for deep balls to Moss if he gained this new weapon.
Randy Moss has not kept it a secret that he is upset New England hasn’t given him a contract extension past the end of the current NFL season, and maybe that would convince him to go to another team. If the Vikings are going to put a lot of money on the table for a contract extension, it would make a ton of sense for Moss to accept the trade. The question would be why New England would want to part with one of their best weapons on offense, and the reasoning must be that the coaches are ready to move in a different direction again.
Coming into the 2010 season, it looked like the Minnesota Vikings were again going to be the toast of the NFC, but they have slipped a bit due to injuries and a very slow start for Brett Favre. The team still has a lot of talent on the field though, and if they were to add someone like future Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss, it would hard to imagine the team not suddenly finding a lot of favoritism amongst NFL analysts again. We shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves here yet though, because the only real indications of a trade taking place are through unnamed sources, meaning that this rumor could end up full of hot air my the morning. That, or Moss could be in Minnesota.
