October is one of my favorite months out of the entire year. From the warm, earthy colors to the crisp, cool air, it is all the essence of autumn in thirty-one amazing days!
The Germans have a long tradition of celebrating the fall with steins of rich, yeasty beer and hearty breads. Oktoberfest extends through the end of September and beginning of October. This festival has spread like wildfire, bringing the giddiness of lederhosen lovers to the less intoxicated parts of the world. Oktoberfest is certainly reason number 1 to love October!
Bring on the glue guns and cinnamon sticks! Children and grandmothers alike delight in the crafting opportunities that the month of October brings. There is just something about pine cones and pumpkins that lends them to crafting. Grab some acorns, leaves, or apples and celebrate reason number 2 to love October.
October is one of the most colorful months of the year with its deep reds, fiery oranges, and earthy browns. You can almost feel the warmth of the colors even while the air remains crisp and fresh. It is the perfect time to take a walk through the countryside and enjoy nature. I find it impossible to be anything but happy in a month of such rich hues, which is why it is reason number 3 to love October.
The earth is sprouting squashes and pumpkins this month. Foods full of antioxidants and nutty flavors abound during October, so take this opportunity to make thick, steamy soups and toast seeds! These are perfect meals to accompany the sweet apples harvested in early fall and the bountiful wine obtained from the grapes that have reached maturity by now. Celebrate October with reason number 4 by indulging your palette.
Breast cancer awareness
For many, October is a time for reflection as it is national breast cancer awareness month. Join those who have won the battle and honor those who have lost by participating in one of the many walks to raise money, such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Join me in reason number 4 to love October-supporting breast cancer awareness.
Young or old, everyone can enjoy Halloween! October goes out with a bang on its thirty-first day in a shockingly sugary festival. Delight in the costumes. Indulge in the sweets. Pass on the memories that last to the new generation of children. Halloween is reason number 5 to love October.
Make the most of this magnificent month! Drink a stein, make a wreath, take a walk, sample the harvest, raise awareness, and trick or treat! Happy October!
