QUESERIA CHIPILO INC. has announced a recall of the following cheese products, all date codes up to and including September 26, 2010 – Fresco and Nov 25, 2010 – Oaxaca.
Oaxaca String Cheese
The Cheese products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. It is one of the most virulent foodborne pathogens with 20 to 30 percent of clinical infections resulting in death. Responsible for approximately 2,500 illnesses and 500 deaths in the United States annually, Listeriosis is the leading cause of death among foodborne bacterial pathogens with fatality rates exceeding even Salmonella. This is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and people with a compromised immune systems. Healthy people might have short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, this infection can cause miscarriages and still births if you are pregnant.
The recalled cheese was distributed in the following states to retail stores and wholesalers: New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, and Virginia.
