Want to take your morning smoothie to the next level? How about adding even more healthy ingredients? Try the Green Smoothie. You use many of the same ingredients but you add a leafy green, such as baby spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, celery, and collard greens. The leafy green in the smoothie makes the nutritional value of the already healthy smoothie sore. They are loaded with amino acids, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. The greens fuel every cell in the body and the result is more energy and mental clarity.
New to Green Smoothies? Here is a basic recipe to get you started. Once you get the hang of it you can mix and match as much as your heart desires.
Start with a quality, strong blender. You want a blender that will effectively pulverize the leafy greens. The blender is basically working as teeth to break down the greens to a more digestible form.
Here are the ingredients:
1 quart water
2 generous handfuls baby spinach
1 apple, with skin and cut into pieces
1 frozen banana
Handful of frozen strawberries
Handful of frozen blueberries
Here is the process:
Pull out about two generous handfuls of fresh baby spinach and add to your blender along with one quart of water. Add a couple swirls of honey. Turn your blender on and allow to blend for a good two minutes. While you are waiting get your apple chopped up and your other fruit ready.
When the greens are adequately pulverized add the frozen banana and blend until smooth. The banana adds a more creamy texture to the smoothie. Add the chopped up apple and again, blend until smooth. It will not be perfectly smooth due to the apple skin but it will be close enough.
Finally, add the frozen strawberries and blueberries. This is where personal taste really comes into play. The last step is when you can really play with color. You will notice that up to this point the smoothie has been a pretty bright green color. If you don’t find that appetizing add a lot of blueberries. The smoothie will become a much more purple color. Or you can add a lot of strawberries and a few blueberries and the color will be more of a pink. You also add the frozen fruits based on how thick you want your smoothie.
Once you have the smoothie the way you want it, pour into a quart canning jar or large water bottle and enjoy. You can make a couple days worth of smoothie at one time and refrigerate one serving but try to drink the extra serving within a day because the nutritional value starts to diminish after that.
Now that you have a basic green smoothie recipe under your belt you can try other varieties. You can try other types of greens and all kinds of fruits. The general rule of thumb is to have 40% greens and 60 % fruit. There are no limits to what you can do.
