When it comes time to retire your old cell phone, don’t toss it into your junk drawer or worse, in the trash! Donate your old cell phone to a charitable organization, not only are you giving to a great cause but you are making a responsible choice as well. Cell phones, along with other electronics, are covered in hazardous substances that can release into the air, water and soil if not properly disposed of. According to Eco-Cell, “It has been estimated that only 10% of unwanted cell phones are recycled each year.” Below are three different organizations where you can recycle your old cell phone.
Cell Phones For Soldiers
Cell Phones For Soldiers is an organization that takes donated cell phones to a company called ReCellular. This company recycles the phones and pays Cell Phones For Soldiers for each phone that is donated. Then Cell Phone For Soldiers uses the money from ReCellular to purchase calling cards that is given to soldiers in need. One phone donated becomes one hour of talk time for the soldier.
The website has easy directions to follow when mailing in your cell phone. It also provides information on how businesses, schools and organizations can become drop-off points for Cell Phones For Soldiers, how to find soldiers in need and much more.
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence also works with ReCellular. The proceeds raised from collecting old cell phones goes towards the organization’s mission to help end violence in the home. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence helps battered women and their children find safe homes, shelter programs; plus they work to empower victims and educate the public on how to recognize domestic violence.
There is a Donate a Phone button on the home page of their website, once you click on that, you will find step-by-step information on how you can donate your cell phone.
Recycle for Breast Cancer
Since 2002, Recycle for Breast Cancer has been collecting electronic items, such as cell phones, printers, toner cartridges, fax machines and quite a few other office supplies. This national recycling company takes the funds from recycling the items and donates the proceeds towards supporting the fight against breast cancer.
Recycle for Breast Cancer reports that a flame retardant is applied to the exterior of cell phones and when burned, it emits toxic chemicals into the environment. Studies have shown that there are links between cancer and the chemicals in our environment.
