Avoiding stress is very important to a senior’s health. Stress sometimes affects people without them even knowing it. The best way to control stress in your life is to have control of everything around you; this is sometimes where the stress comes into play with seniors. Many find themselves losing control of their surroundings and having to become dependent on others; this can lead to a significant amount of stress in their lives.
There are many ways seniors can decrease their levels of stress. The most important thing is identifying an individual who may have an increased amount of stress in their lives and working to eliminate it..
Handle your own affairs. Age does not mean incompetence. Do not allow anyone to make decisions for you unless you feel it is very necessary. If you are used to making your decisions continue to do so. Having someone trying to take over your affairs can create a lot of stress, especially when the help is not needed.
Avoid taking care of grandchildren for an extended amount of time. Some seniors do not want to hurt their children’s feelings and ask them not to leave grandchildren with them. Most seniors feel they have raised their own families and they do not want the responsibility of raising another one. Seniors tend to worry more about caring for someone else’s children the right way. Occasional visits from the grandchildren is appropriate but when its time to go home its time for them to go.
Exercise. Seniors should remain active and get plenty of exercise. Exercising is a great way to keep the stress levels down. Gardening and outdoor house work is a great way to get in exercise each day. Walks in the park or around the park as long as a health care provider has approved it is also a great way to get in daily exercise.
Volunteering in the community. Seniors enjoy being active. No one wants to just sit and do nothing. Get involved in the community or find an organization to volunteer services. Most communities will enjoy having extra help around. Seniors who enjoy being around children may consider joining a mentoring program.
Take a Vacation. If possible plan to take a well deserved vacation. Vacations are a great way to get away from all of life’s daily stress. Plan to visit a location you have always wanted to see but never had the time to do so.
Avoid stressful people. If there is someone in your life that makes your pressure rise just by the mere sight of them, avoid them by any means necessary. The person may not even know they are causing you stress but you do and your health is important.Seniors should remain active and get plenty of exercise.
