The Reggie Bush scandal has already cost USC so much. Now the Reggie Bush scandal will add the Heisman Trophy to the casualties, if the latest reports are to be believed. For the first time ever, a Heisman Trophy will actually be stripped away from a winner, according to Yahoo Sports. The violations committed during the Bush years, and the allegations that he accepted improper benefits, have tainted the USC program. It now seems that the Heisman Trophy trust believes the Reggie Bush scandal has tainted them as well.
According to Yahoo Sports, the Heisman committee will vacate Bush’s 2005 Heisman victory by the end of this month. The NCAA has already ruled that he should have been ineligible for the season due to accepting cash and other benefits. Within weeks, the Heisman trust may take an even more extreme step.
Before the Reggie Bush scandal, no one had ever been stripped of a Heisman Trophy after they had won it. Even OJ Simpson was allowed to keep his, although he had to auction it after his trials. But since Bush allegedly committed his violations during his Heisman season, the committee appears set to take the trophy back.
USC has already gotten a huge black mark from the Reggie Bush scandal, as they have to sit out the postseason for the next few years, and have lost many scholarships. The school already returned its copy of Bush’s Heisman, with new USC athletic director Pat Hadan suggesting that Bush return his in August.
If these reports are correct, a new debate would emerge on whether 2005 Heisman runner up Vince Young would get the trophy. He would have gotten it if the voting was held after the bowls, although he has the bigger prize of a national title already.
Following the Reggie Bush scandal, college football is lucky that the Longhorns upset the Trojans, or they might have considered stripping the national title from the 2005 Trojans as well. There is already uncertainty on whether their 2004 BCS crown should still count, as BCS officials wait on the Trojans’ NCAA appeal.
Those directly blamed for this ordeal are already at greener pastures, however. As the current Trojans live with the consequences from the past, Bush is starting another year with the Super Bowl-winning Saints, while coach Pete Carroll starts a new career with the Seahawks. But the Reggie Bush scandal has still tainted his college career, even as he picks up a Super Bowl ring.
If the Yahoo Sports report is correct, this decision won’t be official until the end of the month, so all sides have time to prepare for the best and worst.
