When people say that Texas has a lot of jobs they are telling the truth. Texas has a lot of temporary jobs that will hire you into their company. I relocated to Texas in 2008 from the Midwest and stayed less than six months. This was the same year the cost of living went up and apartments raised their rent. The average two bedroom apartment is $750. Although there are jobs and great food, there’s much a person from out of state should know before moving to the Lone Star State.
When first moving to Fort Worth, Texas, I was amazed at how clean and organized the city was. Cars had to pass a state law making sure that it met basic standards before getting Texas license plates. Due to this state law the air is much cleaner and breathable. Schools were organized; the kids were easily dropped off and picked up by parents in a timely fashion. The schools had after school programs through the YMCA which made it great for parents that had to work late. The state assistance was organized and if someone needed to apply for food stamps you could get them the same day if all information was correct and completed. Instead of potholes, TX has speed bumps. People drive the speed limit. Fort Worth is a nice, quiet, country type of city ideal for couples, families, and people in their mid 30’s and 40’s. There are a lot of shopping centers and restaurants in Fort Worth, near Benbrook, TX. Some of the nicer areas were in West Fort Worth and areas near Benbrook.
Getting used to 100 degree days in the summer was difficult. Temperatures would rise as high as 105 degrees. It was so hot that most people would try and stay indoors until the evening. Texas has a lot of big insects like roaches, crickets, grasshoppers, and dragon flies because of the heat and humidity. There are cameras at certain traffic lights. Texas has food taxes and their sales tax is 8%. Fort Worth is not really a city with a lot going on. Its partner city Dallas, TX has more things to do for singles and people in their 20’s. Because Dallas was a half hour away it wasn’t that far to drive in the big city and hang out. If you have bad credit they will make you pay a $400 security deposit to get your electricity cut on. If you’re a single parent with children be expecting to have an on call babysitter. Work hours can range from 10 to 6, 7 to 3:30, or 4 to 12:30. Learning Spanish is not a requirement, but a benefit when moving to Texas. Hope this helps your decision in relocating.
It’s a good idea to have a GPS system. Many people have relocated here and may not be able to help you find where you’re going.
