It can be extremely rewarding to tackle home improvement projects on your own, but the side effects are sometimes a project in their own right. Wood stain looks great on wood, but not so great on your favorite shirt, and it can be really tough to get out. The easiest way to get wood stain out of fabric is to use mineral spirits. Mineral spirits are most commonly used as a paint thinner and to clean brushes. Used properly, they can clean the wood stain out of your fabric as well.
Apply mineral spirits to a clean cloth or to the stain directly. You may want to wear rubber gloves, as mineral spirits can be very drying. Be careful not to pour too much out at a time; you just want to dampen the fabric. Dab at the wood stain marks with the mineral spirits.
Reapply the mineral spirits until you see the stain fading. If necessary, you can let the mineral spirits soak the fabric for a few minutes and then resume dabbing at the stain with your rag to work the stain out.
Wash the affected fabric in cold water. If the stains are not completely removed, repeat the process with the mineral spirits and then wash again in cold water.
Warnings: Use mineral spirits in a well-ventilated area. Keep mineral spirits away from children and pets, and do not ingest mineral spirits.
