Republican bumper stickers have become a very important way to promote your values and ideals by posting the message on your car. There are several common themes among bumper stickers that fall within the realm of republican stickers, yet are promoting values, rather than a specific political party. In fact, most of the bumper stickers that we would call “republican” are actually promoting a belief of value of the person driving the car, rather than an overtly political agenda.
The most interesting trend among bumper stickers seems to be that the party that is not in control of congress seems to have the most bumper stickers on the back of cars. I commute about 30 miles a day in stop and go traffic and spend a lot of time reading peoples bumper stickers (there is nothing else to do, after all!) and the vast majority over the last few years have been pro-republican, or at least pro-republican view points.
The most popular issue that I have seen has been that of abortion. There must be a million different versions of the message and it seems (anecdotally) that the “pro-life” view point is a far more popular thing to put on your car than the “pro-choice” view point. Most of the sales sites seem to be keener on selling republican and pro-life stickers than they are in selling the pro-choice stickers. Maybe republicans just have more to spend!
The second popular viewpoint is that of gun control and gun rights. Many republican stickers promote the right of an individual to own guns and shoot guns. Interestingly there are very few anti-gun bumper stickers around. I was able t find a few on sale, but I’ve seen very few on peoples cars. Maybe they’re all afraid of getting shot by the people with the pro-gun stickers.
Since the elections are now over it will be interesting to see how many of these stickers drop off cars and how many more come out of the woodwork to promote more liberal and democratic ideas and ideals since the democrats are now the underdogs. It seems that the “underdog” party always ends up with more stickers on cars and trucks than the party in control of congress does. With the House and the Senate now split it is anyone’s guess what comes next!
