Do you wish there were more trees lining your street? Did you know that Palo Alto residents can request a tree for their street at any time? Click here to fill out a request for a street tree from Canopy, a Palo Alto based organization that helps provide trees for the City.
But before you fill out the request form, make sure that the area you would like to place the tree in qualifies as a street tree. According to Canopy, a street tree is any tree that grows in the right-of way- between streets and property lines or, when it comes to street curbs, a street tree is one that grows in the five foot area that goes from the sidewalk to the front yard. Canopy and the City of Palo Alto have a partnership to arrange the planting of trees around the City. Volunteers plant the trees and help educate residents about the importance of having trees in urban areas.
Once the tree is in the street area, it is up to the resident to water and maintain the tree. Since the tree is owned by the City, staff may come out and trim the tree or provide other maintenance to ensure that the tree remains healthy. Remember that the form is a request and may not be filled. For further questions regarding street trees in Palo Alto, call the Canopy City Tree Section at 650-496-5953.
