Long term breathing problems and other issues may be faced by workers who are cleaning up the oil spill, according to a new study which looked at the effects after the 2002 oil spill which occurred in Spain.
Keep in mind that is still is not certain if the respiratory problems that had been reported by workers in the study possibly can occur to the 50,000 persons who had aided in the clean up of the spill in the gulf of Mexico which had occurred from the explosion the Deepwater Horizon oil rig.
According to Dr. David Savitz, PhD, professor of community health and ob-gyn at Brown University School of Medicine in Providence, Rhode Island, stated it cannot be assumed that the same thing will happen.
However, it does show that there is a possibility for health issues that extend past the current period of exposure, and it strengthens previous knowledge that respiratory reactions are high on the list. Dr. Stavis had co-written an editorial attached to the study.
The study appears in the Annals of Internal Medicine, it includes 501 fishermen who aided in the clean up of spilled oil after the tanker Prestige had sunk off the cost of Spain 2002. The researchers did a comparison with comparable group of 176 fishermen who were not part of the clean up efforts.
Two years later from the incident the fishermen who had exposure to the oil were more probable to report wheezing, chronic cough among other respiratory issues compared to the controlled group.
The exposed fisherman’s breath had higher rates of chemicals linked with lung damage. Smokers were not part of this study.
Also, the researchers had discovered higher amounts of chromosome changes in the white blood cells of the fishermen who were exposed. The changes which have been associated to a greater risk of cancer in other studies stated by Dr. Gina Solomon, senior scientist with National Resources Defense Council, which is a non for profit environmental group.
Dr. Solomon states that due to the chromosome abnormalities she would also worry about the reaction on sperm and egg cells. Dr. Solomon had no connection to this study.
The studies findings imply that participation in cleaning up oil spills possibly can produce unacceptable reactions on health according to Dr. Joan Albert Barbera. Dr. Barbera does emphasize that clean up workers in the study were not of ill health.
There has been no proof found of any progressive illness only biological changes that may inspire to develop illness state by Dr. Barbera, professor at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain.
The data advocates that physicians and health officials in the United States should be looking for respiratory issues in the workers that were exposed to large amounts of oil that out poured from the recent capped leak which occurred in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to experts the two spills are not for certain comparable. To begin with the Prestige spill was about one tenth in size of the Deepwater spill that had bunker oil which has other proportions of carcinogenic compounds than that of crude oil which had spilled in the Gulf states Dr. Solomon.
Secondly, the Prestige oil was spilled upon the surface for that reason it may have had a different composition from the Deepwater Horizon well, which spread through nearly a mile of water before it could have human contact according to Dr. Arch (Chip) Carson, professor of occupational and environmental health with the University of Texas at the Houston School of Public Health.
Cleanup workers for the oil in the Gulf will come in contact with is “reasonably friendly bad stuff” according to Dr. Carson. The possibility of respiratory issues is remote.
Dr. Carson points out that oil is not the only hazard. The dispersants in both of the clean up attempts have the possibility of producing respiratory reactions as well.
The U. S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences just as of late had announced the beginning of a long term study referred to as Gulf Worker Study, to examine the possible health issues coming from the Deepwater Horizon Spill.
Even though the Prestige spill may not be alike comparison it still notes the requirement to make there are safeguards for the cleanup workers.
Gulf works need to have sufficient training and safe guarding equipment along with the access to healthcare and evaluations. They will also need cautious follow up for many years to ahead to ensure they do not promote health problems, they are noticed and taken care of.
There are alternative treatments for chronic respiratory problems. Some are listed below.
Herbal supplements such as using a vaporizer with eucalyptus. Eucalyptus has the ability to loosen phlegm and rid it from the body. Soap wart herb tea contains anitflammatory elements and used to treat inflammation in the airways.
Consumption of foods with omega 3 fatty acids’ aide in conditions linked with body chemicals that are released which cause inflammation. Salmon is a good source of the fatty acid.
Acupuncture helps to activate lung, colon and liver meridians along with detoxifying the liver to rid the body of respiratory problems.
Chiropractic care has been proven to aide in balancing the immune system functioning and relieves problems of asthma symptoms, cold, virus and respiratory problems.Sources:
