I was fortunate enough to get a 16Gig wi-fi (no 3G connection IPAD from work to try out. We purchased the IPAD folding case from Apple along with a VGA video adapter.
It came with the standards application that are pre-installed (notes, photos, ipod, etc). At work we loaded some more application that we thought we might need: Good Reader, Pages, Keynote, and Ifitness. Good Reader which as a document reader. Pages allow the user to create, view and modify word documents. Keynote allow the user to create, view and modify Power Point Presentations. Ifitness allows the user to log in their daily exercises and watch videos (if connected to internet) how to perform certain exercises.
One of the issues we quickly confronted was the purchasing of applications. All of the IPADs were synced to one specific machine. Every employee had different application they wanted or needed. The process of buying applications and distributing them was thought of beforehand. Moreover the continuous updating of applications make it difficult to maintain a “master” IPAD image.
The portability of the IPAD is a major advantage. I took the IPAD on travel a few times and I did not require my laptop, books, or the need for a computer bag. After I typed a document, I just sent emailed it home or to work. Typing on the IPAD requires some practice. Women in the office have complained that they cannot use the on screen keyboard if they have finger nails. Because of that we purchased the non-bluetooth keyboards from Apple that attach to the IPAD. This was much more comfortable to use. However, the IPAD cannot be in the carrying case while using the keypad. The material from the IPAD case forces the connections to loosen and disengage. It is not an easy task to remove the IPAD from the case, so we recommend getting a Bluetooth keyboard if you have the cases.
Overall the IPAD is an extremely useful device. It replaces a DVD player for the car if you’ve been thinking of getting one. It’s great for watching movies while on the treadmill. It’s great for reading books on (you can adjust the background and font so the glare is not an issue). I really enjoy the exercise applications also. However, there needs to be a business plan if they are to be used for work.
