I ran to the grocery store Friday night because we were out of cat food and, knowing my cat, I really didn’t want to enter the house without any for him. While there, I noticed the store had some of their freezer items on sale; including Banquet frozen dinners. Since the dinners were 10 for $10, I picked up a selection of them, including a chicken nugget dinner for my oldest daughter.
I showed this dinner to my daughter last night because she was getting hungry and my wife and I had no idea what we planned on making. Since she said she wanted it, I made it for her.
I have tried several of the Banquet dinners in the past and always thought they were OK for being a cheap meal. But, I also thought they were lacking something. Unfortunately, as my daughter and I discovered, this was the case with this particular meal too.
The dinner consisted of two things; the chicken nuggets and a tray full of crinkle fries. The fries, in all fairness, actually weren’t too bad. They got crisp in the microwave (fries usually get soggy in the microwave) and had just the right amount of salt on them; enough to add taste without being overly salty.
However, when it came to the chicken nuggets, the dinner ended up being a bit of a disappointment. When I made this, I forgot that my daughter didn’t like Banquet chicken nuggets when I bought them for her separately. And, unfortunately, the ones inside this dinner weren’t any different from those. I’m used to buying nuggets that have white meat inside them. These had a grayish meat inside them and lacked any sort of flavor. Probably the only good thing I could say about the nuggets is they weren’t covered in pepper; a problem we had when we purchased Banquet’s chicken finger dinner.
Obviously, you get what you pay for and, in this case, I shouldn’t have been expecting too much for just $1. In fact, the price and the ability to cook this dinner in a matter of a couple minutes without a great deal of work did score it some points. However, while those two things probably will mean I won’t rule out purchasing this particular frozen dinner again; the fact my daughter only ate a little more than one of the nuggets inside it has convinced me not to purchase this with the intention of making it for her and I would not recommend it to parents looking for an easy and cheap dinner or lunch for their kids.
