It used to be a package of sliced American cheese would last us for a couple of months. But, now that we have two kids who love having the slices on sandwiches, as a snack, etc; we seem to go through them much quicker.
There was a time when I would only buy American cheese singles from Kraft. But, out of necessity, I have started looking at cheaper brands. This is why I recently purchased a pack from the brand Crystal Farms.
I have purchased other cheese products from this brand in the past and was very happy with the majority of them. So, when I purchased this product, I had a bit more confidence in it than I have with other brands. However, I also remained a bit of a skeptic since, when it comes to American cheese, there are some brands that are as good as the more expensive Kraft brand but there are plenty of others that have a significant drop off in quality (including a few that taste like they were made with vegetable oil rather than milk).
After seeing my kids eat these without complaint, I decided to have a slice of it this morning for breakfast (I get up way too early and usually wait until later in the day to have a real meal). While not quite as good as the Kraft version or even a few other cheaper brands, I would still consider this one of the top brands.
The only reason I wouldn’t score this one as high as some of the others is the cheese did have a bit of a salty taste to it. At first, it didn’t seem too bad and I thought I would get used to it. But, after a few bites, I really started to taste it and, as a result, didn’t enjoy the cheese quite as much.
However, unlike some of the other brands I have had, it was easy to tell this cheese was made with milk rather than some sort of combination of milk and oil (or just oil) both because of the taste and because it didn’t have a greasy feel to it. And, as I told myself this morning, the taste was something that really was only noticeable when I was eating the cheese by itself rather than on a sandwich or in another fashion that would help hide the salty taste.
If you are looking for a brand of American cheese slices that isn’t too expensive, there are about three others I would recommend before this one. But, if you don’t have options and have an opportunity to buy this brand, it is worth trying.
