Our cat ran out of food again last night (I have to start buying more than two cans at a time). And, as is usually the case, we didn’t discover this until it was after 10 and the only place open was the Walmart on the other side of town.
Rather than driving when I was already half asleep, my wife and I searched for an alternative for him and ended up opening up a can of Great Value Tuna that was in our pantry instead.
Even though I’m not a huge tuna fan, we usually have a few cans of it in our pantry for everything from sandwiches to casserole. Normally, we buy the better known, more expensive brands. But, we purchased this one recently because it was considerably cheaper. From what I could tell, we didn’t sacrifice much in terms of quality.
At first, I wasn’t sure what to think. I opened up the can and the smell was pretty strong. This is something I know my cat loves (which is why he had no problem eating this instead of his cat food). But, to be honest, I thought it was a bit disgusting. I also thought the tuna had a bit too much water in it.
However, after getting the can completely open and draining off most of the water (which, in turn reduced the smell), I have to say the tuna was much better than expected.
First, there was quite a bit packed into that can. There was enough in there to give the cat dinner, breakfast and lunch without him acting like he wasn’t getting enough to eat. That would be the equivalent of one decent sized meal for us and potentially more; depending on what we made with it.
Normally, when we purchase cheaper brands of tuna, you can tell the difference in the meat. But, in this case, the tuna meat looked to be, at very least, equal in quality as the more expensive brands. It was very flaky rather than packed together to the point it was almost mush.
Once again, this was supported by our cat, who is very picky when it comes to eating (almost as picky as my daughter) and won’t touch most brands of generic tuna. He ate every bite of this tuna.
If you like tuna, either in sandwiches or in entrees like casserole, I would recommend purchasing this brand instead of the more expensive brands.
