The first time I ate at Jarrod & Rawlins in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia I was pretty close to packing my bags and moving to Malaysia. Yes, the food is that good. With incredible food, a warm and fun atmosphere and an extremely unusual way of choosing the food you’re going to eat, it’s no wonder Jarrod & Rawlins is so popular, with four restaurants opening in only five years.
The Concept of Jarrod & Rawlins – The restaurant chain has an amazing concept, you don’t find in many other restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. First of all, it serves everything from breakfasts to pub food, sandwiches to salads, light meals to full four-course dinners and even has a huge delicatessen where you can buy meats, pates, wines and cheeses to take home.
But the real fascinating thing about Jarrod & Rawlins is, when you order, you can either order directly from the menu or you can choose the meat you’d like to eat from the deli counter then tell the waiter how you’d like it cooked. They charge you an extra 12 ringgit for the privilege (around $3.50),which I didn’t think was worth it bu the friend who was with me did and said he would definitely be doing that the next time. Either way, whether you order from the menu or choose your own meat, the meat at Jarrod & Rawlins is still incredible.
The Food at Jarrod & Rawlins – My friend and I decided to start off with a shared salad and, as the waiter recommended the Grilled Chicken Salad, we ordered that. Arriving momentarily, the salad consisted of lettuce, feta cheese, olives and tomatoes and it was scrumptious.
Next on our list were main dishes, and here’s where my friend ordered ‘The Full Works’, which is an All Day Breakfast. A heaping plate of sausages, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, bacon, mushrooms and hash browns arrived (pretty much your typical British breakfast) and he stuck in. Declaring everything on the plate “Superb”, he’d already finished his meal before I’d eaten one fourth of mine.
My entree was the Dynamite Sausage. Not for the faint of heart, as it’s spicy hot, if you love chilis you’ll adore Jarrod & Hawkins sausages. Cooked to perfection, juicy and chewy, oh, they are perfect. Really.
The problem is, after my plate of mostly meat, I still wanted to try more, so we got an order of Roast Pork, which arrives with a side of apple sauce. This was so delicious, if I wasn’t completely stuffed, I’d have ordered another one. The crispy skin was to die for.
The Atmosphere at Jarrod & Rawlins – We ate at the location at Ampwalk at Jalan Ampang as my friend had heard it was the least crowded one. Relaxed and cozy and very much like a bistro, you can eat either inside at standard tables or on higher bar-style stools, or outside on a small patio. Either way, I loved the atmosphere and the no rush style of the management. Service was definitely slower than similar Kuala Lumpur restaurants, which could be annoying if you’re in a rush at lunchtime, but as everything is cooked fresh, I wasn’t complaining.
Overall, if you love meat, breakfasts, sandwiches stuffed with fillings, or like to choose your own meat, you’ll love Jarrod & Rawlins. The food is incredible, the service friendly and the atmosphere trendy and fun. Price-wise, you can get away with a lunch or dinner, including a beer, for around 150 ringgit ($44), which we thought was great for the quality and place.
