I mentioned in another review that my wife and I ended up doing some shopping at Aldi this past weekend. And, even though we were primarily after canned and boxed goods, we ended up visiting their freezer section for some things too.
One of the items we ended up buying was a box of Kirkwood Original Crispy Chicken. To be honest, when we bought this product, I really had to convince myself it was worth it. This is because I have had other Kirkwood products in the past and, with very few exceptions, have been less than impressed with them.
However, I ultimately decided that the chicken couldn’t be any worse than the frozen Banquet chicken we used to buy (the brand is nothing but skin, fat and bone). And, considering it was considerably less than that brand, I decided it was worth trying.
I had originally intended on making this on Sunday (the day we bought it). But, we ended up having dinner at my parents’ instead (they were already feeding our kids when we went back to get them and we figured we might as well eat there too). As a result, we ended up making it last night instead.
When it was all said and done, I do feel I got exactly what I thought I was buying; a budget brand of chicken that made an OK meal but wasn’t anything special.
There were a couple things I did like about this chicken. First, the skin got crispy just like the box advertised. Second, there was a bit more meat on the chicken than I expected; at least more than what I’ve gotten from the more expensive Banquet brand in the past.
However, even though there was more meat than I expected (and a lot less fat), the pieces still were a bit on the light side for me. Let’s put it this way. If I buy chicken from the store’s meat section, I’m usually able to eat two pieces. With this brand, I needed four to feel like I was getting full.
Overall though, I do feel like this is something I would consider buying again. It wasn’t great. But, it proved to be an easy and decent enough product that I didn’t have to drain my bank account to buy. If you are looking for something for dinner and have an opportunity to buy this, I would recommend picking up a box of it.
