Since my daughter is in school again, we are constantly looking for healthy snacks to send with her; both to go with her lunch and for when they have snack time in the morning (something I’m really glad her class has considering she doesn’t always eat all that much for breakfast in the morning).
My daughter loves chewy granola bars; especially the ones that have chocolate chips in them. Because of this, we always make sure to have a box of them. And, just because they are in the pantry, there are plenty of times when I can’t resist trying them for myself.
The last time we were at the store (Sunday afternoon), we came across chewy granola bars from the brand Millville. We had never tried this brand before. But, it was considerably less than our regular brand and we decided to give them a try.
When I purchased the Millville Chewy Granola Bars, I honestly wasn’t expecting too much from them. This wasn’t the first time we have bought a cheaper brand. And, more often than not, the cheaper brands just don’t seem to be as good as the more expensive brand (Quaker) that we usually buy. However, in this particular case, the Millville brand proved to be just as good as the more expensive granola bars.
One of the first things I noticed about this brand is it understands what chewy really means. Many other brands advertise themselves as chewy. But, when they describe themselves that way, they really mean chewy as in chewing taffy. I can’t tell you the number of times I have purchased granola bars that I felt like spitting out after chewing them for a few minutes. This brand was just right. They were easy to chew and, more important, swallow.
As far as taste goes, I had no complaints about these. The granola bars had a natural sweetness to them that was improved by the chocolate chips inside it. Unlike some other cheaper brands, the taste wasn’t hidden behind a bunch of sugar (something I think defeats the purpose of buying a healthy snack like this).
If tasted side-by-side with our regular brand, I think the Quaker brand would still be a bit better. But, considering I did spend quite a bit less on this brand, I do think the overall quality was good enough. The next time my daughter is running low on granola bars, I plan on buying another box of the Millville brand.
