My fiance brought home with him Country Crock Garlic Mashed Potatoes that someone had given him from the rig, thinking I would enjoy them. I like mashed potatoes, even instant ones, and considering that these are toted to be made with “100% fresh russet potatoes”, I thought I’d give them a try and have mashed potatoes for dinner tonight.
The whole container has 5 servings in it, 2/3 cup per serving, at 160 calories per serving, 60 of those from fat, so I figure it’s pretty healthy, so long as I wasn’t tempted to eat them with gravy or slabs of butter, like I thought I might be tempted to. They didn’t smell so great, and looked a little watery in the container, but when I spooned out a bit onto a plate, the potatoes looked fluffy and homemade, so it raised my spirits.
I chose to cook my potatoes in the microwave for about 3 minutes, with carrots and broccoli on the side to make my small serving of potatoes more filling. After 3 minutes I had dense, yet fluffy potatoes that were firm yet not dry and slightly crunchy veggies on the side. Mmm.
The potatoes are surprisingly good- they taste like you would expect refrigerated mashed potatoes to taste (think leftovers and that’s how these taste). They didn’t taste instant, and the garlic was obvious and yummy, and I could taste sour cream and the hint of butter as well. Texture aside (they don’t taste like the creamiest mashed potatoes I’ve ever had), the entire flavor was tasty enough that I just ate the mashed potatoes with pepper, no salt, added butter, or sour cream. They were fine just plain as they were. I mixed in my carrots and broccoli, and the garlic mashed potatoes were a great complement to my slightly cooked veggies.
While the Country Crock garlic mashed potatoes have the texture of leftover refrigerated mashed potatoes rather than freshly mashed potatoes I make myself, the flavor and texture was altogether pleasing. There are ample servings in a single container (I only had about 1/3 of a cup and got filled up) and it sure beats instant potatoes when you’re not in the mood to cook mashed potatoes yourself. I’m eager to try other flavors Country Crock has in their mashed potatoes, because in a pinch these potatoes are tasty and easy to cook. Would I say no to another container? Nope, I liked it just fine.
