I am always seeking out new nail polish colors, and with fall and holiday colors mostly in mind during this time of year, I have kept my eyes out for unique reds, greens, and auburn’s. Year after year though nail polish companies compete to the core trying to display their colors nicely on shelves, or using nifty eye catching ads to attempt to lure in every dollar they can from consumers. Sadly though, year after year we are presented with colors that are similar to last years holiday wonders.
Sally Hansen however managed to catch my eye today, and I was really excited to get home and try out my newest find, Downtown Rubies.
This color is part of Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure collection, which have yet to disappoint me. Well, the price is a bit jaw dropping, and Downtown Rubies nearly got shoved back on the shelf due to Rite Aides $7.59 price tag. I snagged this gem up though seeing that it was the very last one left in this color.
The color is what caught my eye initially. It reminded me of Dorothy’s red ruby slipper, and frankly I think Ruby Slipper would have been a more suiting name for this one.
In the glass bottle displayed before me was truly nothing more than clear polish, with tons of sparkling, eye catching red flecks of glitter. At first on the shelf it looked like a drab drawn out glitter, but once I got it in good lighting I realized exactly what this polish had to offer. Besides a wild glitzy glimmer of red, this polish reminded me of Christmas, and I knew it would go perfect for the holiday season that is so soon approaching. If I added some white lines to my nails on top of Downtown Rubies, I knew I would have a neat little candy cane effect going on, thus the polish came home with me.
In my experience using Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polishes in the past, I have never needed to use more than 2 coats of the polish. I was hoping with this polish the result would be the same, as I hate sitting around waiting for coat after coat to fully dry before I can add another layer.
I also enjoyed past experience with this collection due to the wide brush; it truly allows you to just swipe and move on quickly to the next nail. It’s like a fool proof wand, and it really makes application happen all the more quickly, and easy.
This particular color however had its drawbacks, and I realized after just 1 swipe that I should have added a normal red base nail color, followed by Downtown Rubies, as this nail polish required about 4 coats before it fully concealed my plain nails.
It was annoying, but luckily dry time was fast, and only took me about 10 minutes to complete the nails, with dry time included in that equation.
Pretty is my first reaction, but as the nail fully dried to a more stiff finish, I can’t lie and say I was in love because I wasn’t. The high shine of the ruby red coloring dis down and requires a clear coat finish to really keep the glimmering effect at its best. Without a clear coat finish the color looks semi drab, and dare I say, cheap; an effect I could have gotten with a red glittery nail polish from the NYC collection, which would have only cost me around $2.00, vs $7.59.
Sorry Sally, I’m going to recommend that my fellow nail color junkies skip out on this one. I thought it was unique, thought it would have only required 2 coats of paint, and thought the results would have shimmered a lot nicer than they did. Close, but no cigar.
