Recently Taurus International Manufacturing, a leading hand gun manufacturer, released the newest editions to their sub compact slim line pistol series. The PT740ss and PT740b both feature a 3.2 inch barrel and fire a .40 caliber round. Previously the slim line series only featured .380 caliber and 9mm, so these two editions added a lot more firepower to the subcompact lineup.
Both the PT740ss and PT740b models weighing in at only 19 ounces feature the same specifications including a capacity of 6 + 1. For the safety minded individual the 740 has the patented Taurus security system which allows you to disable the slide on the pistol as well as the trigger safety that must be depressed in order to fire the pistol.
Even for being a subcompact pistol the PT740 packs a lot of punch for its size, yet it is easily controllable. I would not recommend it for shooting at more than 15 to 20 yards because of the short barrel, but for self defense and concealment purposes wish a MSRP of only $483 this pistol definitely ranks as one of my all time favorites.
The 740 can be concealed almost anywhere on your body without printing through even the lightest shirt, as a matter of fact I currently carry mine in the watch pocket of my jeans and it fits perfect. I have not really found anything I did not like about this pistol with the exception of the small grip, however once you are used to it it feels very comfortable to carry and fire. The extended magazines (to be released at a later date) will also assist in providing more room for your small finger to rest. To date I have fired 550 rounds flawlessly without a single jam or misfire, and I am impressed with the accuracy the pistol delivers.
Of course one of the biggest concerns with all pistols would be keeping them clean to ensure they will work perfectly when you need them to work. The 740 is extremely simple to tear down. The whole tear down process can be completed even by a novice in less than a minute, and reassembly is just as simple. There is absolutely no way to place the slide return spring, firing mechanism, or barrel incorrectly so you can rest assured the pistol will work flawlessly when you need it to.
I currently carry this pistol as my primary firearm as I am not concerned with the small capacity, It only takes one shot to do the job. For those who prefer a larger framed weapon as their primary pistol the 740 would work great as a backup and conceals nicely in an ankle holster. Based on the modest price, the simplicity of the pistols inner workings as well as the reliability I would recommend this pistol to anyone looking for something small to carry. Be smart with your guns and as always keep safety as your number one priority
