This is a review of two new release children’s math storybooks Whole-y Cow: Fractions Are Fun and Zero, Zilch, Nada: Counting to None. They are published by Sleeping Bear Press. I was provided copies of these children’s math storybooks by the publisher, but was under no obligation to recommend them. My observations are my own.
Synopsis of the Children’s Math Storybook Whole-y Cow: Fractions Are Fun
This work by Taryn Souders uses rhyming text to describe the various activities of a farm cow, from swimming, taking a bath, and catching butterflies with her best friend. Because the cow’s activities are brightly and cheerfully illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss, the use of fractions is visualized and invites questions relating to the pictures; for instance, one set of questions involves how much of the cow’s swimsuit is of this or that color. Pages 2-23 feature the story and questions, and the last two pages have answers to the questions raised. The ISBN Number for this product is 1585364606, and its Suggested Retail Price is $15.95.
Synopsis of the Children’s Math Storybook Zero, Zilch, Nada: Counting to None
Harry the rabbit has just begun a new job at the balloon factory, where his first job is to blow up 100 balloons using a special set up that helps him keep count of them in tens. Unfortunately, he gets lots of advice from his co-workers, who try to tell him to count to 100 via tens, fives, twos, and ones, which results in a bit of comedic chaos. Nonetheless, the points on counting to 100 are nicely taught, thanks to the narrative of the author Wendy Ulmer and the colorful illustrating of Laura Knorr. The ISBN Number for this 32 page product is 1585364614 and its Suggested Retail Price is $16.95.
