To our left, there were four beautiful girls sipping martinis as if they were straight out of Sex and the City. To our right, a group of young men in button-ups and dark-washed jeans were waiting on their food. The other tables consisted of couples on date like my husband and I and groups of friends gathering for a night out. Everyone was dressed up and looking sharp at Umi Sushi Restaurant and Sake House. After all, it’s a very trendy place in an up-and-coming Seattle neighborhood.
In Belltown, First Ave is the most happening with restaurants, boutiques, wine bars and clubs all standing next to each other. Nothing screams “yuppy” more than this stretch of lively entertainment center. On any given Saturday night, you’ll see the street packed with the young and beautiful all looking for a good time.
Umi is one of the most popular places here. Although the front entrance doesn’t look too big, this restaurant is more spacious than expected. With a huge dining area, sushi bar, front den and an indoor court yard, Umi is actually set up like a real house. The interior has a clean and contemporary style, with dark wood finishes and Asian art deco.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Umi. Not only is this place comfortable to dine in, the crowd of trendy customers made great eye candy. For those who like to be out and about, Umi is the perfect place to start a fun night out.
The sushi at Umi was quite good as well. I’ve eaten a lot of rolls, and Umi served the biggest and most unique rolls I’ve had! Just check out Umi’s menu at this address http://www.umisakehouse.com/Menu.aspx for a complete list of specialty rolls.
Out of curiosity, I tried the Tropical Paradise. Surprisingly, the sweet blueberry sauce over a mix of mango, strawberry, tuna and salmon created a tasty combination. And the sashimi my husband ordered was fresh and delicious. It’s obvious that the fish they used was of high quality.
We ended our date night at Umi pleased and satisfied. The price may be a little high, but it is Seattle we are talking about, and we did have sushi.
Overall, I really enjoyed Umi Sushi Restaurant and Sake House and will definitely return another time.
To feel comfortable among the beautiful girls and guys who often Umi, it’s probably appropriate to dress up a little. Also, because it’s so popular, making reservation is a good idea.
Some places in Belltown, especially on busy First Ave, let go of their food because they focus so hard on a trendy image. I’m glad Umi has both – a great place for the beautiful, young people to go out and be seen, and also a good place to eat yummy sushi.
