A couple of weeks ago, I decided to buy a bag of Old Dutch cheesy puff corn and, even though it was OK, I ultimately decided there wasn’t enough overall quality to justify not buying a slightly more expensive brand of it.
When I came to that conclusion, I decided not to buy any more Old Dutch products for a while. However, my wife was out shopping the other day with my youngest daughter and she saw a bag of the Old Dutch Puff Corn on the shelf. Since my daughter wanted it (we use it as a substitute for her whenever we are eating pop corn), she decided to buy a bag.
At first, I thought my wife wasted her money. However, I thought it over and realized that, just because I didn’t like the cheesy puff corn we had purchased before didn’t mean I wouldn’t like the regular puff corn product they offered. So, before passing judgment against it, I waited until I at least tried it.
Unfortunately, I ended up coming to the same conclusion I came to with the cheesy variety. In fact, while I actually somewhat liked the cheesy variety, I ended up hating this one.
First of all, I have the same complaint about this variety as I did the cheesy variety; the puff corn itself is very small in size. I, and more importantly, my daughter, like larger puff corn pieces. The pieces in this brand are very small, even for someone her size.
Also, unlike many of the more expensive brands we could have purchased, the puff corn had a greasy feel to it and left a clear, slimy coating on our fingers whenever we ate it. This wasn’t that huge of a deal to me since I know how to use a napkin. But, there is nothing worse than a toddler with greasy fingers (especially since she loves to touch things).
The biggest disappointment for me though was the taste. As I said before, the cheesy variety was OK, just not as good as the other guys. This brand was less than OK. The puff corn had no taste to it at all and simply was not enjoyable. Even my daughter, who still isn’t old enough to be picky, won’t eat more than a couple pieces at a time.
If you are shopping for puff corn for your kids or for yourself, I would not recommend purchasing this brand.
