I’m a huge fan of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, so when I saw their limited edition key lime pie, I pounced on it. I love key lime pie, and I love ice cream, so I figured this would be a great combination.
But on this one, Ben and Jerry’s missed the mark. The ice cream is basically vanilla, lime custard, graham cracker crust, and this marshmallow-ey goo that I was assuming to be meringue swirled on top. The first bite I took was straight lime, and so sweet and tart (like taking a straight spoonful of lemonade mix powder) that it really had me puckering up and almost choking.
The second bite, I got a bit of graham cracker and vanilla ice cream, but also got a huge mouthful of that gooey marshmallow meringue. Included was another tart mouthful of that lime custard, so it was a bit hard to swallow. It was extremely sweet and tart at once, and for once the graham cracker mixed in the combination was a turnoff- it was overpowered by the heavy taste of lime and meringue and just made the texture of the bite really crunchy.
I tried stirring the combination a bit, but every spoonful I got was either straight lime custard or a thick spoonful of meringue, which I was trying to avoid. The ice cream wasn’t smoothly mixed like Ben and Jerry’s other flavors are, and on their own the lime and meringue were just too much tart and sweet to handle. The vanilla ice cream was almost undetectable amidst the powerful scent and flavor of everything else.
I got through about 4 bites until I got too bad of heartburn to eat any more. The lime was just too much. The ice cream was too little. The meringue was just too…gross. And the graham cracker may as well have just been left out because while it was crunchy, the texture was weird in the combination and the flavor of the graham cracker completely lost.
I’ve had this ice cream in my freezer for about 2 months now, and it has remain untouched since I tried it. My fiance and his kids took one sniff and turned it down. It really is an overpowering lime scent and flavor. Perhaps if you love meringue and lime to the point of eating it straight, then this ice cream might be for you. Imagine eating a key lime pie without crust and this is basically what this treat tastes like.
I was hoping for a lot more vanilla flavor, as I thought lime and vanilla would be a welcome taste. I won’t be trying the Ben and Jerry’s limited edition key lime pie again, as it was just too much lime and meringue for me and left me feeling ill with too much sugar and gave me heartburn from the tartness of it all.
