The other day, I was walking through the grocery store and they had Our Family Microwave Popcorn on one of their end displays. Normally, I would have just walked past it because we already had popcorn at home. But, the boxes were only 99 cents (for three bags) and, at that price, I figured it was worth giving it a try.
When I purchased this product, I thought I would be popping up a bag that very night. But, we actually didn’t get around to making it until yesterday; when we were sitting around watching some TV.
While not quite as good as some of the more expensive brands we have purchased, I do feel this value brand of popcorn exceeded my expectations of it.
I have had cheaper brands in the past and usually have the same two problems with them. The first problem is the popcorn tends to burn easily. I usually wait until the popping slows down (like the bag tells you to). But, by then, it’s too late. The other problem I have is I rarely get a full bag of popcorn. In fact, with many cheaper brands, I’m lucky if the bag is half full.
I did not experience either of these problems when I made the Our Family popcorn. Once again, I waited until the popping slowed down and, this time, I did not have a problem with the popcorn burning. The bag was also completely full with very few un-popped kernels on the bottom.
When we started to make this popcorn, we were a bit concerned it would have too much butter. I know that doesn’t sound like a big deal. But, the bag was practically yellow from the butter inside and we were afraid it would make the popcorn soggy. However, as it turned out, there was just the right amount of butter inside; enough to give the popcorn flavor without being a drippy mess.
I did, however, think the popcorn had a bit too much salt on it; which was my only real complaint about it.
Overall, I do feel this brand was well worth the money I spent on it and offered enough quality for me to be willing to spend even more than the 99 cents I purchased it for. Like I said before, I don’t know if I would put it at the same level as some of the more popular brands of microwave popcorn but this one is definitely a cheaper alternative that I would consider buying again.
