I think I mentioned in an earlier review that we recently had to take our daughter to the Walmart Vision Center for an eye appointment and, while she was in that appointment with my wife, I did some grocery shopping.
One item I picked up while at the store was a bag of Romano’s Macaroni Grill Grilled Chicken Florentine Skillet Dinner. When I picked this up, I was a bit concerned about the price (it was nearly $7). But, it looked like something that would be a quick and easy meal for two and I have liked other items I have purchased from this brand so I figured I would give it a try.
I finally got around to making it this past weekend and, while I don’t think it was worth the money I spent on it, it did prove to be pretty decent.
First of all, as far as convenience goes, this particular variety of skillet dinner definitely won some points. All I had to do was empty the contents of the bag into the skillet, add a bit of milk and then cook it until it was fully heated. I have purchased way too many other brands that require several steps; something that defeats the purpose of buying a bagged meal because they weren’t any more convenient than simply making the meal from scratch.
I was also very impressed with the overall quality of this product. One of the biggest things that stood out for me was the quantity and size of the chicken. I have purchased plenty of other skillet dinners that skimped when it came to the meat. This one was not one of them. And, I even could say the same about the spinach (which came in clumps). This effort really showed up when it came to taste. I don’t know if I would describe it as restaurant quality. But, it was better than most other frozen dinners I have purchased.
However, that being said, there were also a couple things I didn’t like about this product.
First of all, when the bag says you need to use a non-stick skillet, it isn’t kidding. I made sure to follow that instruction when I made it and, even with the non-stick coating, I had to scrape quite a bit of this off the bottom of the pan when I was done. I consider this a negative because there was some food that was wasted as a result.
Also, the Grilled Chicken Florentine dinner had the same problem most other bagged skillet dinners have; there isn’t much inside the bag. To be fair, it didn’t advertise itself as a family sized dinner or anything (like many other brands). But, I don’t think there was enough in the bag for two people. The only reason my wife and I got full from it is because we made something to go with it.
Again, as far as skillet dinners are concerned, this one is definitely one of the better ones out there. But, mostly because of the lack of quantity, I don’t think I would be willing to buy it again unless the price came down a bit.
