We were at Walmart this past weekend when I remembered I needed to buy some new blades for my razor (I was on my last one and that was getting very dull). I ended up going over to that section of the store planning on just buying the replacement blades for my Gillette Fusion. But, when I got there, I discovered the store had once again raised the price of them.
Not wanting to spend nearly $15 for four blades, I decided to look at the other brands that were being offered. After some indecision, I ended up buying a Schick Hydro 5 razor instead.
I think I’ve seen commercials for this razor before. But, that wasn’t the reason why I purchased it. The reason I bought it was both the $7 price tag on the razor (which is affordable compared to most of the other brands now that our Walmart got rid of their store brand razors) and the $10 price tag on the replacement blades; nearly $5 less than the Fusion.
Of course, when I purchased this razor, I couldn’t help buy have doubts about it. It took me forever to find a razor I liked as much as the Fusion and, up until that point, I honestly could not find another one. However, after trying the Schick Hydro 5, I do think it is as good and maybe even a little better.
Because my last blade was getting so dull, I hadn’t shaved in four days (it was the weekend and we weren’t going anywhere anyway). By the time I used this blade, I had a nice beard started and, as a result of that and the fact I don’t use shaving cream (it’s too much of a hassle), was expecting some pain or irritation while shaving it off.
However, despite what I said above, the Schick Hydro 5 gave me a very comfortable shave. It cut through my beard without pinching or pulling and I didn’t experience the same irritation I usually experience when I attempt to switch razor blades. The only discomfort I got was when I accidentally cut my chin (and that wasn’t the razor’s fault; I slipped).
I was also very impressed with the closeness of the shave. Again, I think it was as good as the Gillette Fusion when it came to that; if not a bit better.
I didn’t think I would ever switch from the Gillette Fusion razor. But, if this razor remains the more affordable option, I think I will be.
