I have made no secret of my addiction to Mountain Dew or my efforts to find cheaper alternatives to the beverage whenever possible (so I have another choice if I can’t find it on sale anywhere). I have had some success with this. But, more often than not, the cheaper knock-offs just aren’t that good.
Earlier today, I was at work and one of my co-workers was coming in from his lunch break carrying a 12-pack of Sun Drop soda. Curious about it, I asked him what he thought of the beverage and he said he drinks it all the time. And, when he offered me a can, I decided to try it (I plan on bringing him 50 cents tomorrow to pay him for it even though he didn’t ask for anything in return).
Like most other citrus sodas, I don’t think this one is quite as good as Mountain Dew. But, it isn’t terrible either.
The biggest difference between this brand and Mountain Dew is the citrus taste is a bit stronger. When I first tasted it, I thought it tasted more like orange juice than a soda with an orange juice like taste. But, after a few swallows, I started getting used to the stronger taste and did feel it was better than many of the other brands that are out there. For example, while I didn’t like it as much as Mountain Dew, I did like it more than Mellow Yellow.
I should also mention I was drinking this soda at room temperature; something that I do often because I don’t have a fridge at work (other than the one in a public area and I don’t trust that one). There are some drinks you simply cannot drink if they aren’t cold. This is not one of them and I appreciated that.
If there is one thing I didn’t like about this drink it would be the fact it seemed a bit thicker than the Mountain Dew. This really wasn’t too big of a deal, but I couldn’t take more than a couple of swallows at a time without feeling the need to belch. I’m the kind of person who likes to chug my soft drinks so I would deduct a few points for that.
However, overall, I do feel this is a decent enough beverage. I would still choose Mountain Dew over it. But, I would definitely consider this brand as an alternative and I’m glad my co-worker gave me a chance to try it.
