A few days ago, I was at our local Walgreen’s picking up some milk and, because I never seem to be able to go to that store without taking the time to browse (I especially love the “as seen on TV” items they usually have), I ended up wandering the store a bit.
As I walked through their snack food section, I ended up seeing a bag of Walgreen’s Select Pistachios. Since it was less than $1, I decided to pick it up.
I should take the time to mention I’m not really a big pistachio fan. I will eat them. But, they aren’t my favorite kind of nut either. In fact, the only reason I purchased this particular bag was both because of the low price and because I am trying to get my oldest daughter to try new foods and figured this was something she might be willing to try.
However, after trying the Walgreen’s Select pistachios, I do have to admit they weren’t too bad.
The thing that impressed me with this particular brand of pistachios was the size. I have purchased other brands in the past that, after removing the outer shell, really didn’t offer much in terms of the actual nut. These were actually pretty large in comparison to those other brands. It still took quite a few to get a filling snack (my biggest complaint about pistachios) but at least I could say they did fill me up.
The pistachios also had just the right amount of salt on them. This is another problem I’ve had in the past because most brands don’t use enough or, if the brand is using pistachios that are older or aren’t as good quality wise, they will use too much. These were lightly salted and offered just the right amount of additional flavor.
My biggest complaint about this brand (and this is one I have with most brands) is a lot of the pistachio shells weren’t even opened by a little crack. I don’t know about you, but I have never figured out how to get the pistachio out of a closed shell without smashing the actual nut. So, as a result of this, I ended up throwing a few of them out to the squirrels.
Overall though, I do think this was a good purchase. Again, this isn’t my first choice for a snack. But, this brand was better than most.
