Our oldest daughter has always wanted to go to Chucky Cheese. But, the closest one is a bit of a drive for us and she doesn’t really like pizza so we have never taken her. However, a friend of the family recently told us of a somewhat similar place that is a bit closer to home; Pizza Ranch in Waupun, WI. And, they were so convinced we would like it, they even got us a couple free adult buffets there in an effort to encourage us to give it a try.
Since we were having a family weekend together this past weekend (the last one before my daughter starts school again), we decided to finally take the kids to Pizza Ranch. And, for the most part, I was not disappointed.
After getting lost a bit in Waupun (I rarely go there and my wife and I forgot to get directions to the restaurant), we got to Pizza Ranch about 5 p.m. One of the first things I noticed when we got to the restaurant was how friendly the staff was. Since it was our first time there, we ended up walking through the wrong door. I have been to several restaurants where that would result in you getting yelled at. But, instead, one of the servers greeted us and, realizing we weren’t regulars, pointed us in the right direction.
I did feel the buffet was a bit expensive. Not so much for adults ($8.79 normally and ours were free because of the coupon we were given) but for the kids. At first, 79 cents times the child’s age didn’t seem too bad. But, I remembered my youngest daughter is usually free and our oldest daughter is about $2 less at most other buffets. However, I will say the restaurant made up for this by only charging us 75 cents for drinks since most other places usually charge about $2.
And, while on the small side, the buffet did prove to be worth the money. They had several pizzas to choose from and you could put in a special request if you didn’t see one you like. My oldest daughter, who, as I said before, doesn’t really like pizza, was able to find a couple things she liked; including some very large potato wedges. And, even our youngest was able to find some things to eat.
Even though it was primarily a pizza buffet, I should mention the fried chicken they offered was fantastic. I ended up eating about five pieces of that.
The only thing that proved to be a disappointment for us was the game area. When we took the kids in there, I wasn’t expecting it to be huge (it’s not like we took them to Chucky Cheese) but it was much smaller than expected (our FYI Zone here in Beaver Dam offers a bigger selection of games) and the prizes you purchased with tickets from the games weren’t that great.
Because of the food, I do think this restaurant was worth the trip and I definitely would return there. But, I’m not sure if I would go there with the intention of letting the kids play any of the games.
