I have been a fan of the Rice Bowl brand of side dishes for quite some time. They are affordable, easy to prepare and taste delicious. I recently discovered their New Orleans Style Dirty Rice Mix and stocked up my pantry after my first taste. If you are looking for a very inexpensive but tasty rice dish to add to chicken, beef or pork, this product is for you.
I pay only ninety nine cents for an eight ounce box of this rice. Considering the fact that flavored rice dishes can cost more than three or four dollars for the same quantity, this is definitely a bargain. We all need to be mindful of our food budgets in this economy and a ninety nine cent side dish that feeds my family of four is definitely very appealing to me.
Preparation of this product is extremely simple. After combining two and a half cups of tap water and two tablespoons of vegetable oil in a two and a half quart saucepan, the liquid is allowed to come to a boil. The rice and seasoning provided in the box gets added to the boiling water. The heat then gets reduced, the rice mixture gets stirred and the pot gets covered with a tight fitting lid. The dish is then allowed to simmer for approximately twenty five minutes until the rice is nice and tender. Occasional stirring is recommended to prevent sticking. Once the timer goes off, the rice should be allowed to stand for about five minutes before serving. This product can also be prepared in the microwave according to the directions on the back of the box.
A one cup serving of Rice Bowl New Orleans Style Dirty Rice contains one hundred and forty calories. There is absolutely no Fat in this product which is an excellent factor. There is also no Cholesterol in this rice dish. Unfortunately, this serving size contains three hundred and ninety milligrams of Sodium. This represents sixteen percent of the daily recommended value. There is thirty grams of Total Carbohydrate, and three grams of Protein per one cup serving. On the plus side, two percent of Vitamin A, two percent of Calcium and eight percent of Iron is included in this side dish. Those consumers who are concerned about the Sodium content of this rice dish should definitely make allowances in other meals to compensate for this amount.
I absolutely love the taste of this rice dish. It has a nice amount of spice and perfectly complements many different meat main courses. This side can also be bulked up with ground beef or sausage to make a very filling and satisfying main course. Chopped vegetables can also be sauteed and added to this rice for a nice change of pace.
I definitely give this very affordable and tasty rice mix a full five star food rating. It is inexpensive, flavorful and can be prepared in minutes. I certainly plan on keeping my cupboards well stocked with this rice mix through the long and cold winter.
