I started working out a couple of years ago after realizing I was starting to tilt the scale. Like many other moms, I had been focusing on raising my children, and working to provide a good life for my family. I decided to join my local 24 hour gym, Planet Fitness , and it’s made all the difference in my life. Weight loss is what led me to working out and joining a gym was the first step in my journey. The trick to succeeding and achieving all my goals was coming up with a workout routine that works for my body type.
Running is excellent for cardio. You can burn at least about 100 calories per mile. That number can go up depending on body type and movement. The treadmill is always my first stop upon entering the gym. I walk about one fifth of a mile, or .20 at a speed of at least 3.5 to stretch my legs. I’m 5’1 and I have very short legs so for me 3.5 is darn near a jog. Speed should be adjusted to a fast paced walk. After loosening up my legs with the walk, I pick up into a run changing the speed to 5.0 with arms always swinging in a back and forth motion. I run at this speed for a full mile without stopping. The goal is to keep a continuous burn. After I reach 1.20 miles, I then go for a full on sprint at 6.0 for an additional .30 of a mile leaving me at 1.50 miles. After my run, I continue walking on the treadmill at whatever speed I feel comfortable at for the day completing the remaining .50 to equal 2 miles completed. This particular part of the workout is essential to me because it burns a lot of stomach fat which is something that a lot of people don’t realize. I have 3 children which left me with a kangaroo mommy pouch as the child bearing experience tends to do to most moms. So for my body type this is the most crucial part of routine.
After running, I hop on the elliptical for more fat-burning cardio and do another mile. My body has a natural muscle build and for me it’s a matter of burning the fat off the muscle and continuing to build on what’s already there. I’m usually on the elliptical for about 15 minutes. I don’t so much worry about the speed, but I monitor my heart rate and try to keep it between 150-160 bpm (Beats Per Minute). The elliptical is not only good for cardio, but it does an amazing job trimming the thighs as well as building muscles in the lower body and lifting the butt region. I’ve always been heavy in the thigh area. Even when I was at my lowest weight of 115lbs, I can guarantee that at least fifty of that was lodging in my thighs. Since I started using the elliptical, I’ve dropped about 3 pants sizes.
Next on my workout agenda is to target trouble spot which is and always has been my stomach. I use an ab crunching machine with 50lbs attached and do three sets of 25 reps. After that, I do the ab swivel chair at 40lbs doing three sets of 12 on each side. This is a perfect machine for me to eliminate troublesome love handles and creating an hour glass figure.
It is strongly encouraged to join a good gym if you have a desire to drop a few pounds. A gym can in many ways act like a support system and motivational tool. I workout every other day or 4 times a week. At times when it get’s too demanding I cut down to 2-3 times a week. Being the fact that my gym is 24 hours, it’s very convenient and I don’t have to worry about my schedule interfering with my workout. I’ve lost 20 lbs since joining the gym and as long as I keep up with my routine, I keep my weight loss and toned body without a problem. I really don’t have any food restrictions. I just make sure my body gets the exercise it needs. My workout schedule is not demanding and I’m usually out of the gym in a little less than an hour.
