With the release of Rock Band 3 around the corner, the new instruments to play Rock Band 3 Pro Mode with are being released. I got my hands on the new Rock Band 3 Wireless Pro Drum Set from MadCatz last week and have been putting it through its due diligence.
First and foremost the drum set seems sturdier, with more anti-skid Velcro patches on the bottom of the drum set, keeping it planted firmly on the floor. The drum pads which aren’t silent are a lot better than the first Rock Band drum kit and marginally better than the Rock Band 2 set or the Rock Band: The Beatles drum set, and the three cymbals included on the set feel rugged and durable.
The two small problems I came across with this set is that the kick pedal is very loud, especially on double kicks which even on a rug will cause a lot of noise. While this isn’t a huge distraction it can be with someone singing in the same room, plus it takes away from the music playing on the game. The actual controller built into the drums also is a little unresponsive, especially the start button and the Xbox live button, there is a slight delay when pressing on those buttons. Another small confusing aspect to the drums is that the A button acts as the Start button on the menus for both Rock Band 2 and The Beatles Rock Band games. Hitting start will not advance the menus even though it says hit start on the screen, you’ll have to hit the A button. While those are small issues, paying $116 for a plastic drum set should be pain free.
The drum pads and cymbals are very responsive, and although the pads and cymbals are velocity sensitive I did not notice a wide range within that sensitivity. I only notice the pads and cymbal registering a soft hit or a hard hit and not the many levels in-between, but for a toy this thing is pretty cool.
If you are a Rock Band fan like me then you’ll need to purchase this set to play Pro Mode with on the new Rock Band 3 game. If however you already own a Rock Band 2 kit, you might just want to buy the 3 cymbal add on kit, especially if your kit is functioning properly. If however you still own your Rock Band drum kit you will definitely want to pick up the Rock Band 3 Wireless Pro Drum Kit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the responsiveness of these drums.
