Actor Ryan Reynolds has been named People magazine’s 2010 “Sexiest Man Alive.” The announcement came the same day People is set to broadcast a primetime television special on ABC: “25 Years of Sexy: People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive!” Oddly enough, the “Green Lantern” star is the first to admit that there will be many who know him who will think the choice was a mistake. Because Ryan Reynolds wasn’t always the handsome, abs-defined movie star people have watched develop into a major star over the years…
“I was such a goofball [growing up],” Reynolds told People. “I went through puberty in my early 20s. That’s a big part of the problem. I looked … like sort of a very athletic girl up until I was about 21.”
Nobody would mistake him for a very athletic girl at 34. In fact, People‘s editors found him to be the “Sexiest Man Alive.”
But he has to work at it, he tells the magazine, just like he has to work at being serious.
“My body naturally wants to look like Dick Van Dyke,” he joked in the interview he did for the popular magazine. “When I stop training, I turn into a skin-colored whisper.”
What does the 6′ 2″ Canadian think of his new title?
“You just have to go with the flow,” he says. He adds, “This gives my family entre into teasing me for the rest of my life.”
He also figures that having the title will probably alter conversations with his wife, silver screen siren Scarlett Johansson. “Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest man, take out the garbage.’ That does sound better,” he admits.
Still, there could be problems: “The most difficult part is going to be organically working this title into a conversation with random strangers.”
He shouldn’t have too difficult a time working it into a conversation with his “Wolverine” co-star should they cross paths in Hollywood in the future. Hugh Jackman was People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2008.
Johnny Depp won the title in 2009.
But all jokes aside, Ryan Reynolds seriously hit his stride in late ’00s, starring in popular movies like “The Proposal;” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine;” “Definitely, Maybe;” and marrying Johansson. He then won the lead role in “The Green Lantern,” which will make its debut in the summer of 2011. According to the Internet Movie Database, he is also slated to appear in a prehistoric animated comedy, “The Croods,” with Nicolas Cage and soon begin work on “The Change-Up” with Olivia Wilde and Jason Bateman. Another movie, “Most Wanted,” where he plays opposite his “The Proposal” co-star Sandra Bullock, is in pre-production as well.
Some might view the “Sexiest Man Alive” title a mistake or even somewhat misleading, but there is little doubt, if his interview with People magazine is a good indicator, that Ryan Reynolds will have no problem dealing with the tremendous burden it will place on him.
Hosted by Kim Kardashian, “25 Years of Sexy: People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive!” airs on ABC Wednesday evening at 10 p.m. EST.
