Thanksgiving is a time for joy, celebration and family. San Antonio embraces that rich tradition by offering a few wonderful family oriented activities in its downtown River walk Area beginning on Thanksgiving and going through the weekend.
Thanksgiving Day, November 25
The Elderhostel Hotel offers locals and visitors a three-day San Antonio Riverwalk tour package. This offering allows participants to partake in a guided tour about Texas history, the Alamo, the Missions and more.
The terrain is not for the faint of heart and buyers of this package should expect to walk a minimum of 2 miles per day. The cost for an all-inclusive out of town package will run approximately $700 per person. This is an all day package, for the holiday weekend. The hotel also offers packages for commuters who do not require a room purchase with their tour package, or who may have opted to stay elsewhere.
Friday, November 26
The FORD Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony opens up the holiday season with a bang. Over 122,000 lights grace the length of the historic San Antonio Riverwalk, providing onlookers with a visual cornucopia of delight.
The parade begins at 7:00pm on the 26th and tickets to the parade range from $10 – $25 per person. Make your purchase early, as tickets to the more desirable, reserved spots often sell out quickly.
Another option, however, is to obtain a reservation and seating along the windows overlooking the Riverwalk in one of the area’s many restaurants or hotels. This provides privacy and a reprise from the crowded venue, as normally over 150,000 attend the lighting ceremony and parade. Parking for this event is limited, so carpooling is advised.
Saturday, November 26th
Beginning the Saturday following Thanksgiving, FORD presents holiday boat caroling along the banks for the Riverwalk. This begins nightly under the canopy of lights at 6:30pm to 9:45pm and allows patrons to stroll down the River with the melodious sounds of carolers from a variety of genres at no cost. Impromptu sing-a-longs occur throughout the evening at restaurants and local venues such as the famous outdoor Anreson Theater throughout the evening.
Of course, the Riverwalk itself provides its own scenic charm. Local merchants, musicians, and activies appeal to locals and tourists alike with some kid-friendly venues as well as some more adult entertainment. Everything from Jazz bands to the popular Rainforest Café can be found in the downtown area. With hundreds of options for eateries and entertainment, the San Antonio Riverwalk provides plenty to do for everyone for Thanksgiving or any time of year.
