The past six weeks I have been staying with my daughter, helping her to care for her new infant baby girl. When our baby turned five weeks old, I decided we needed to look for some infant toys to help stimulate her.
Unfortunately, many of the stores that I visited did not have the type of infant toys that I desired to buy, so I kept looking. Finally I found the perfect infant toys at my local Toys R Us store. When my daughter was a small infant, I had some fantastic toys that stimulated her vision. They had shiny surfaces, as well as bold contrasting colors, and that is what I was looking for, and found with the Sassy Spin Shine Rattle.
The Sassy Spin Shine Rattle is perfect for infants! This rattle measures six inches in length, with two large balls at each end. The largest ball is about 2 1/2″ in diameter and is made of clear plastic. Inside of this clear ball is a three sided disc that has three different designs. One side of the disc has a metallic shiny covering, similar to a mirror. Another side has a black and white bulls-eye style symbol, and the last has a black and white lady bug with pink, yellow and orange spots.
The ball at the opposite side of the rattle measures nearly two inches in diameter, and is made of a solid black plastic, covered with large white contrasting dots. The handle between the two ends is two inches long, and is covered with small bumps that can stimulate a baby when they are holding this educational toy. On top of that, there are three thick plastic rings measuring 1 1/2″ in diameter, and these are colored red, orange, and yellow.
As soon as I spotted this Sassy Spin Shine Rattle at Toys R Us, I knew this was exactly the kind of toy I wanted to buy for my granddaughter! The package states that babies in the 0+ age range can “focus on objects 8-12 inches away”, and that they can “develop binocular vision where both eyes work together”.
I was already aware that bold colors and high contrast colors are easier for an infant to see, and that is exactly what we got with this Sassy Spin Shine Rattle! Sassy explains that reds are the first colors that newborns are able to see. I love this rattle! When I hold it about 8 inches from my granddaughters face, she seems mesmerized by it. She specifically likes the end of the rattle that contains the shiny spinning disc, but she also likes the click clack sound of the rings sliding back and forth between the ball ends, and she likes the bright contrasting colors.
There have been times when my granddaughter has been engaged by the Sassy Spin Shine Rattle for a good ten minutes or more. When she gets older, I am sure she will love playing with the rattle, enjoying being able to make the spinner turn, and feeling the bumps on the rattle handle. Of course to keep her attention at this young age, I have to continually move it around and allow the spinner to turn as well as allow the rings to slide back and forth. I can’t wait until she is old enough to hold the rattle by herself, it would be a great toy for distracting her when we are out in public or need to keep her occupied when she is in her car seat or stroller.
I truly feel this Sassy Spin Shine Rattle helps our baby to focus her eyes, and it provides a form of stimulation for her eyes and senses. I love the different textures as well as the contrasting colors. It retailed for around $4, which is a good value, in my opinion.
