From the beginning of time, religion has been used as a catalyst for conflict and this does not appear to be changing anytime soon. Many of us expect it from extremist on the left and the right but what has been happening with even more frequency is that this cancer is spreading ever so fast within our political arena. I say ours because it is something that we all must take ownership of. May be you do not spew this venom like so many others but to allow it to go unchallenged, uncorrected or unpunished is just as bad.
Matthews Chapter 2 tells us about King Herod who heard of Jesus’ birth from the three wise men attempting to get directions. It tells us that Herod called a meeting of the Jewish religious leaders of that time and of course they told everything that they knew. The only thing that saved the baby Jesus was these same three wise men refusal to go back to Herod and tell them where he could find the son of God. We hear people of all stripes hide behind the veil of being a Christian while remaining silent when they clearly see bad things happening. Things which anyone who can read knows are against the very book they claim that they would die to defend. When any group lives and breathe on the word of those who we have chosen to lead us in the churches or government, we set ourselves up for great disappointment. We do this because we rest our faith on the shoulders of mortals and their interpretation of God’s word instead of reading it ourselves. When you follow blindly the word of a mortal just because he tells you that God speaks to him or her, then it is not Christ that you follow. You should know these things if we are truly Christian.
Being a Christian is not like clothing that you can put on and take off whenever it is convenient or most beneficial, it is a belief, a desire and a drive that you must maintain twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Being a Christian does not mean that you must be perfect but it does mean that you must at least honestly try to prefect your ways! Being a Christian does not mean that you must always be right but it does mean that you must always try to be righteous. No mortal will ever be able to walk on water as Jesus did so don’t even try but we do have the talent of understanding, of compassion and of forgiveness. Properly exercising of these talents can make us a bridge over any amount of water.
Stop hiding behind Christ as you spew hate toward your brothers and sisters at the same time claiming to be of a Christian Nation. Stop hiding behind Christ as you demean those who look, speak, love or worship differently than you at the same time claiming to be of a Christian Nation. Because if you truly believe that hating and demeaning is what this Nation is all about then you have failed to realize that with that belief there is nothing Christian about it.
