Almost all women crave chocolate when their special “friend” comes to visit every month. It’s very easy to reach for a chocolate candy bar…and then another…and maybe one more by the time your seventh due of menstruation is up. Unfortunately, this can be very bad if you are trying to remain on a diet. The good news is there are many guilt-free treats to satisfy PMS chocolate cravings without gaining weight.
Fruit Dipped in Chocolate
One of the healthiest snacks that you can eat to satisfy your PMS cravings is fruit dipped in chocolate. You can either melt chocolate chips to create a dip or buy a premade variety of dip at the supermarket. Strawberries, bananas, apples, cherries, pineapple, and even blueberries can be great when dipped in chocolate. Also consider adding some marshmallows into the mix. If you want to indulge in a creamy treat, consider chocolate yogurt or a pudding snack cup. It’s rich and satisfying, but also not as fattening as your favorite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. One serving (35 g) has about 140 calories, 3.5 grams of fat (1 gram saturated fat), 220 mg of sodium, and 10 grams of sugar. Granted, chocolate graham crackers should be enjoyed in moderation, but they are a lot healthier than some of the other treats you could be reaching for – say, a chocolate glazed donut or brownie.
Drinking a cup of hot chocolate can be a great way to satisfy your PMS chocolate cravings without overindulging. Keep in mind that the packets you buy at the grocery store are generally lower in calories than premade hot chocolate from a machine. Also keep in mind that mini marshmallows are a healthier additive than whipped cream, which adds more calories and fat to a fairly healthy beverage.
