Snacks often eat up a large portion of the average American’s grocery budget. Chips, nuts and other salty snacks are often a must have for many households, but can cost a bundle. What many people fail to realize is that homemade salty snacks are not only easy to make, but can save money as well. Instead of spending your hard earned cash on preservative filled snacks, why not make your own?
Canned nuts are outrageous in price. Bagged nuts found in the baking section are much more affordable, especially if you stock up during the holidays. Of course, they aren’t salted, but that’s where you come in. Not only can you easily roast nuts with salt, but you can make spiced nuts as well. All you need to do is melt butter and add your favorite seasonings. It may be cayenne pepper or you may want a blend of rosemary and thyme. Once you’ve coated the nuts in the melted butter and spices, simply pop the nuts in the oven and bake at 350 degrees until they start to smell nutty. Immediately remove the pan from the oven and pour the nuts off the pan so they don’t continue to cook.
Pita chips have become a popular salty snack over the past few years, but they can cost close to $4 for a medium-sized bag. This is not a good deal. Pita chips are easy to make. All you need to do is cut pita bread into wedges, brush with olive oil and add your favorite seasonings. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown and allow to cool. If you want to save even more money, make your own pita bread.
